AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day
Saturday, September 9, 2017

AKC's Responsible Dog Ownership Day was held on September 9, 2017 at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. Our club's Meet the Breed booth was well represented by four Great Danes and their owners: Sparkle (Patty Thomas), Lilly (Tracy, Richard and Aaliyah Cyr-McMillon), Marty (Memory Armstrong) and Gulliver (Rose and George Hielscher). We also saw members Betty Lewis, and Carol and Pat Ragan at the booth. There was a huge turnout and we were approached by so many different kinds of people and dogs. Young, old, tall, short, hats and wheelchairs, everyone who approached was met with a gentle demeanor and a wagging tail. All were great ambassadors for our breed!

The AKC event coordinator, Christina Weisse, sent out a follow up email reporting the following highlights of the day:

  • 91 dogs microchipped and enrolled in Reunite
  • 64 dogs took the AKC CGC test with 84% passing
  • 23 dogs took the AKC CGCA test with 100% passing
  • 26 dogs took the AKC Trick Dog test with 96% passing
  • 107 dogs ran through the My Dog Can Do That course
  • The raffle brought in over $1,000.00 for the Pet Disaster Relief Fund which directly benefits hurricane victims.

The day was lots of fun and a huge success!
